OPG - Orthopantomography

Description:Is a special purpose orthopantomography X-ray unit with Cephalography attachment. It provides you with a “soft Press”Control pad for ease of operation in taking the x-ray. Also known as an "panorex", is a panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It shows a two-dimensional view of a half-circle from ear to ear. Machine: Advapex Opg X-ray unit.

Q).What is an Orthopantomography- (OPG)?

An Orthopantomogram (OPG), also known as an "orthopantogram" or "panorex", is a panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It shows a two-dimensional view of a half-circle from ear to ear.

Q).What are some common uses of the procedure?

OPG x-ray unit ebables you to take following X-ray :

  • Full jaw x-ray (opg) in Adult as well as child programme.
  • Temporo Mandibular joint (T.M.Joint X-ray).
  • Right side close & open & left side close & open x-ray in one film
  • 2 or 4 views in 1 Film.
  • Maxillary sinus x-ray .
  • Cephalography x-ray front view & profile view.

Q). What are the Principal advantage of OPG images?

  • Broad coverage of facial bones and teeth
  • Low patient radiation dose
  • Convenience of examination for the patient (films need not be placed inside the mouth)
  • Ability to be used in patients who cannot open the mouth or when the opening is restricted eg: due to trismus
  • Short time require for making the image
  • Patient's ready understandability of panaromic flims, making them a useful visual aid in patient education and case presentation.
  • Easy to store compared to the large set of intra oral x-rays which are typically used.

Diagnostic uses: OPGs are used by Dentists to provide information on:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Periodontal bone loss and periapical involvement.
  • Finding the source of dental pain
  • Assessment for the placement of dental implants.
  • Orthodontic assessment. pre and post operative.
  • Caries detection especially in the inter-dental region.
  • Diagnosis of developmental anomalies such as Cherubism, Cleido cranial dysplasia.
  • Carcinoma in relation to the jaws.
  • Tempero mandibular joint dysfuctions and ankylosis.
  • Diagnosis of osteosarcoma, ameloblastoma, renal osteodystrophy affecting jaws, hypophosphatemia,

The most common use is to determine the status of wisdom teeth and trauma to the jaws.

Q).How should I prepare?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your exam. You may be given a gown to wear during the procedure.

Metal objects including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins may affect the OPG images and should be left at home or removed prior to your exam. You may also be asked to remove hearing aids and removable dental work.

Q).What does the equipment look like?

Base: The entire machine stands on the heave base plate for stability & support.

Column: It is a free standing vertical stand on which the carriage holding the OPG Mechanism moves.

Carriage:It moves up & down on the column according to patient’s height,with the help of a motor & foot switches.

The entire OPG movement rotates during OPG & TMJ x-rays.

Chin Rest: The patient has to rest his chinon the chin rest & hold the tooth bite between front teeth.

Tube Head: It houses the x-ray Tube,HT & filament Transformers etc.

Patient Positioning Lights: There are two lights. Light-A is for Alignment of patient & Light-B is forHorizontal & 3rd Molar Alignment of patient.

Mirror:It allows easy view of the patient during alignment while taking OPG or TMJ X-ray.

Q).What will I experience during and after the procedure?

OPG tests are a quick and painless procedure.

Q). What should I do after the OPG test?

After the images are obtained, you can resume normal activities immediately.
